A short Look

Mimmo Rotella (born 1918 in Catanzora, Italy) was one of the founders of Nouveau Réalisme (New Realism) 1960 in France (more links at A.H.L.T. Pop Art).

The picture Avviso of 1960 is one of his decollages. In contrast to the collage this is not a combination of elements, but multiple layers are gradually removed in a destructive process.

We know such motives from advertisement pillars or billboards. These have been used as patterns for works of art. (look at Wolf Vostell at A.H.L.T. Pop Art)

Abstract concepts come together with the proposed approach of the artists of that time to bring back reality into the picture and to reflect on reality.

So the art work can be seen as an abstract composition in the contrast of colours, forms and structures.

The process of making (and the expression of destruction created by it) and the recognizeable characters (just like their origin) refer to the situation of the society of the 60ies (and perhaps to our own?).

Ein kurzer Blick

Mimmo Rotella (geboren 1918 in Catanzora, Italien) gehoerte 1960 zu den Mitbegruendern des Nouveau Réalisme in Frankreich (weitere Links im A.H.L.T. Pop Art).

Das Bild Avviso von 1960 ist eine seiner Décollagen, in denen in einem destruktiven Prozess, im Gegensatz zur Collage, nicht Elemente zusammengefuegt , sondern Uebereinandergeklebtes abgearbeitet wird.

Uns sind solche Motive von Litfasssaeulen oder Plakatwaenden bekannt, die auch als Anregung fuer diese Bilder dienten. (siehe auch Wolf Vostell im A.H.L.T. Pop Art)

Abstrakte Bildvorstellungen vermischen sich mit dem Anspruch der Kuenstler der Zeit, Realitaet zurueck ins Bild zu bringen und damit zu hinterfragen.

So ist das Kunstwerk zum einen lesbar als abstrakte Bildkomposition in der Gegenueberstellung von Farben, Formen und Strukturen,

zum anderen verweisen das Herstellungsverfahren (und der damit erzeugte Ausdruck der Zerstörung) und die wiedererkennbaren Schriftzeichen (wie deren Ursprung) auf die Situation der damaligen (und heutigen?) Gesellschaft.
